Mining-Friendly Minas Gerais: Excellent Infrastructure & Streamlined Permitting
Minas Gerais state has a rich mining history, and as such has a traditional mining jurisdiction with a highly efficient permitting process. In July 2022, the Brazilian government issued a presidential decree allowing unrestricted trade of any products containing lithium. This new legislation simplifies foreign trade procedures on the export of lithium and its derivatives by eliminating the requirement to get clearance from the Science and Technology Ministry’s nuclear energy committee.
Moreover, In July 2023, The Itinga and Salinas projects were granted priority status by the state of Minas Gerais regional government bodies, facilitating support and acceleration of approvals and licensing through the development process towards mine operation and production. The Itinga and Salinas projects are located within the Eastern Brazilian Pegmatite Province (EBPP), a 150,000 km² area, stretching from the state of Bahia, through Minas Gerais, to Rio de Janeiro. Pegmatite gemstones were first found in the EBPP 400yrs ago, and in the last 100 years Brazil has produced most of the world’s supply of gem crystals and cut gemstones.
The EBPP is also abundant in lithium-bearing spodumene. This has been proven in Sigma Lithium Corp.’s Grota do Cirilo Project, located within a few kilometres from Lithium Ionic’s Itinga properties, which hosts a combined measured and indicated resource of 85.6 million tonnes grading 1.43% Li2O.
The Project has access to excellent infrastructure, including highways, hydroelectrical grid power, water from the nearby Jequitinhonha River and commercial ports (Porto de Ilhéus and Porto de Vitória).
